Spending funding with lots of restrictions can feel so complicated and overwhelming. I’m talking about all the favorites here – streams like ESSER, Title I, IDEA, EANS, Title II, Title IV, CARES Act, CRRSA or similar federal, state or local sources.

Leaders of organizations of all sizes can agree – it’s great to have this money: it’s so appreciated, so needed, and having enough funding is always a challenge in the non-profit world…*and* it can be really hard to decide how to spend this, keep straight what has been spent out of which streams, avoid getting tangled in the red tape, go through various approval channels and then actually spending down the full funds to which you are entitled (and we haven’t even gotten to how cash flow figures into of all this…!).

Every leader wants to reach the goals of their organization, and the elusive question that every leader faces is: “How do I best spend these funds that will help us reach our goals and our mission?” A few spending cycles show almost all leaders what not to do (and have them saying, “Well, that didn’t work like I had hoped…”).

It’s confusing and can be hard to make decisions, particularly with so many people having opinions on the place these funds need to be spent on. I created this definitive guide to help you think through where the funds can have the biggest impact.
